Adoption in legislation and programs, from the Netherlands to Sweden and Sri Lanka

Biologist fights data about birth in primitive cultures

International adoption and everything that goes with it remains good for a stream of newspaper, magazine and book publications, ranging from spicy scientific studies to problems with growing adoptive children to popularly written stories along the lines of "How did we get our child?" A number of these books are now discussed here.

We start with the study "Adoption children at home and at school". This is about the integration after eight years of 116 children from Thailand into Dutch society. The compilers of this study result are F. Juffer, B. C. Waardenburg and Prof. R. A. C. Hoksbergen. They are all connected to the Adoption Center in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Utrecht University. The report of the somewhat older research was published by Swets and Zeitlinger in Lisse. Chairmanship SATURDAY 21 JANUARY 1189 dr. R. Deibel of BIA / Wereldkinderen introduces the book.

Child sex ring run out of UNICEF office

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Sixteen people, including a former UNICEF official, were convicted Monday of participating in a child sex ring that used a lab in the cellar of a UNICEF office to develop pictures of children in obscene acts.

Jozef Verbeeck, 63, former director of the Brussels office of the U.N. Children's Fund, was sentenced by a Belgian district court to two years in prison for his part in the scandal.

The ring used an organization called CRIES, a French acronym for 'Study and Research Center on Children and Sexuality,' as a cover for its operations.

Verbeeck was charged with knowledge of the group's activities, coordinated by Michel Felu, a UNICEF employee who installed a photo lab in the cellar of the UNICEF office to develop pictures of children engaged in obscene acts.

Felu was sentenced to eight years in prison. Other ring members, ranging in age between 30 and 64, received prison sentences of four to 10 years.

ROMANIA RENOUNCES MOST-FAVORED-NATION STATUS

ROMANIA RENOUNCES MOST-FAVORED-NATION STATUS

The Romanian government, faced with new White House and congressional demands for improved human rights performance, has renounced American trade benefits given to communist countries with liberal emigration policies, U.S. officials said yesterday.

State Department spokeswoman Phyllis Oakley said Romania informed the United States that it will "renounce" the trade concessions, subjecting Romanian goods to higher tariffs as of July 2. Romanian sources say their country could lose up to $250 million in trade with the United States.

Romania also will lose eligibility for U.S. government-supported export credits through the Commodity Credit Corp. or the Export-Import Bank, Oakley said.

The decision reflects the deterioration of relations between the United States and Romanian leader Nicolae Ceausescu, who has been wooed by U.S. administrations in the past because of his relatively independent line from Moscow.
