As a doctor, I am ashamed of how the Swedish state is failing the adopted children.

The government's decision to establish an adoption-specific resource center comes far too late and the apology fails. Once again, the government is failing adoptees.

As early as 2002, a Swedish study in the Lancet raised the alarm that internationally adopted people are at a significantly increased risk of suicide and serious mental illness [1]. This picture has since been confirmed in several Swedish studies [2-5]. Despite the fact that the research situation has been clear for over two decades, healthcare interventions remain inadequate. In an investigation in 2022, the National Board of Health and Welfare concluded that healthcare is failing to provide adoptees with the support they need [6], and the Adoption Commission came to the same conclusion in its final report from 2025 [7].

The Adoption Commission’s investigation also concluded that thousands of adoptions have been carried out using false documents, abducted children and outright violations of the law. Yet the Swedish state has still not apologized, and it was not until a year after the Commission’s investigation was presented that the decision to introduce the national adoption-specific resource center proposed by the investigation was made. However, there is nothing in the decision to suggest that the center will offer care or training for healthcare professionals [8].

Without the right expertise in healthcare, a patient with an adoption background who seeks help is often misdiagnosed or receives standard treatment that does not take into account the patient's wholeness and background.

What I find most outrageous about these abuses is the silence and passivity of our government. Our Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson was chairman of the Adoptionscentrum during a time when documented irregularities in adoption activities were going on with his full knowledge [9]. That it is the same person who today heads the government that can decide whether the Commission's proposal should be implemented or not is deeply undemocratic.

For every day that passes without an apology, without opportunities to trace one's roots, financial support to travel to one's homeland, or the right to one's identity papers, more first parents (biological parents) die without their children ever having the chance to meet them. Identities and relationships remain lost forever, and more adoptees end their lives without ever having received the right help or their truth acknowledged.

I myself am not adopted, but as a doctor I refuse to remain silent when my patients are let down by the state that once promised them a better life.

As a doctor, I am ashamed of how the Swedish state is failing the adopted children.

Redan år 2002 slog en svensk studie i Lancet larm om att internationellt adopterade löper en kraftigt förhöjd risk för suicid och allvarlig psykisk ohälsa [1]. Den bilden har därefter bekräftats i ett flertal svenska studier [2-5]. Trots att forskningsläget varit tydligt i över två decennier är vårdinsatserna fortsatt otillräckliga. Socialstyrelsen konstaterade i en utredning år 2022 att vården brister i att ge adopterade det stöd de behöver [6], och Adoptionskommissionen kom i sitt slutbetänkande från 2025 fram till samma slutsats [7].

Adoptionskommissionens utredning slog också fast att tusentals adoptioner har genomförts med falska handlingar, bortrövade barn och rena lagbrott. Ändå har svenska staten fortfarande inte bett om ursäkt, och först ett år efter att kommissionens utredning presenterades kom beslutet att man ska införa det nationella adoptionsspecifika resurscentrum som utredningen föreslog. Det står emellertid ingenting i beslutet om att centrumet kommer att erbjuda vård eller utbildning av vårdpersonal [8].

Utan rätt kompetens i vården blir en patient med adoptionsbakgrund som söker hjälp ofta felbedömd eller får en standardbehandling som inte tar fasta på patientens helhet och bakgrund.

Det jag finner mest upprörande med dessa missförhållanden är tystnaden och passiviteten från vår regering. Vår statsminister Ulf Kristersson var ordförande för Adoptionscentrum under en tid då dokumenterade oegentligheter inom adoptionsverksamheten pågick med hans fulla kännedom [9]. Att det är samma person som i dag leder den regering som kan besluta om kommissionens förslag ska genomföras eller inte är djupt odemokratiskt.

För varje dag som går utan en ursäkt, utan möjligheter till röttersök, ekonomiska bidrag för att resa till sitt hemland eller rätt till ens identitetspapper, dör fler förstaföräldrar (biologiska föräldrar) utan att deras barn någonsin hinner träffa dem. Identiteter och relationer förblir förlorade för alltid, och fler adopterade avslutar sina liv utan att någonsin ha fått rätt hjälp eller sin sanning erkänd.

Jag är själv inte adopterad, men i egenskap av läkare vägrar jag vara tyst när mina patienter sviks av den stat som en gång lovade dem ett bättre liv.
