Last week I was delighted to represent the International Social Service (ISS) GS during the transnational roundtable on #kafalah in Paris in the framework of the Project FAMIMOVE. Together with Sandrine PEPIT - director of Droit d'Enfance - Fondation Méquignon (ISS France)- and Wiem Guedira - legal officer at Droit d'Enfance - FondationMéquignon (ISS France) – we joined the discussions on the challenges regarding the reception of #kafalah in legal systems that do not foresee this protection measure. Important insights on the Dutch system have been shared by Jolien Janse part of the FAMIMOVE Advisory Board, and the Dutch Central authority, as well as by Cécile Corso on the preparation of #kafils by the Femmes Informations Juridiques Internationales (FIJI).   This meeting has represented a great opportunity for the International Social Service (ISS) to recall the findings of its 2020 publication 'Kafalah - Preliminary analysis of national and cross-border practices' (available in French and English) and to propose possible avenues to ensure that #kafalah is indeed a child protection measure respectful of children’s rights, both domestically and across borders.   Thank you Fabienne Jault and Mayela Celis for having the International Social Service (ISS) on board!

I’m thrilled to announce my participation to the last week AHRI conference - Human Rights Defenders Under Siege in Bilbao hosted by University of Deusto! It was an incredible opportunity to meet with academics and to show the challenges to international mechanisms of protection. I participated to interesting and fruitful discussions on the actual risks faced by human rights defenders in the South America region, among these the risk of impunity, stigmatization, criminalization and limitation of civil society’s spaces, as stressed by Tania Reneaum Panszi (Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos) and Lourdes Castro (Somos Defensores). Space was devoted to the sharing of experiences and many human rights defenders and climate activists raised their voice in such occasion, highlighting their vulnerability and even threats to the temporary protection systems. Firstly, I would like to thank Francesca Caprini, from Yaku, to let me join her in this project; Felipe Gomez Isa and Enrique Eguren for the amazing coordination and organization; and Spanish Commission for Refugees (CEAR) for sharing their experience in the Spanish Network for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders. 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of the UNGA resolution adopting the Declaration on human rights defenders; on this matter, Michel FORST said that, despite various negative trends, “we need to be hopeful” and this continuous dialogue is key to fill the gaps and strengthen the means available. Meanwhile, we’re far from having a similar space for discussion in Italy … #humanrightsdefenders #declaration #conference #debate #sharing #bilbao #ahri

Under the SIDA CSO Strengthening project, Save the Children and its seven partner civil society organizations came together for a two-day of active learning and participating at the “Annual Reflection and Planning Workshop” from November 15th – 16th, 2023.    The workshop aimed to promote mutual understanding of the SIDA CSO framework, with the partners reflecting on the progress made so far and identifying areas requiring improvement.     During the workshop, participants discussed the successes and challenges encountered in the past year and developed joint planning for 2024.     Chea Vibol from the Cooperation Committee for Cambodia (CCC) stated, “The workshop has provided more strategic direction, enabling us to customize our work plan to meet the project's intervention. We can modify our proposed activities to suit our project partner's needs and identify collaborative activities.”    The SIDA CSO Strengthening project is focused on building the capacity of civil society organizations to better advocate for and protect children's rights.   #AnnualReflectionandPlanning #SIDA #CSOStrengthening #SavetheChildrenCambodia

If you do not know about International Bridges to Justice (IBJ), please learn about their work and how you can support them. Every day, in countries around the world, hundreds of thousands of people (also children) are arbitrarily detained, tortured, and denied access to counsel. This problem can be solved by ensuring the protection of vulnerable defendants through prompt access to lawyers in police stations, prisons and courtrooms. Watch this amazing, but shocking TED-talk: https://lnkd.in/djSYsCv9

Leidar and International Bridges to Justice shed light on torture and injustice. On Tuesday Leidar gathered Norwegian business leaders, NGOs, lawyers, think tanks, and scholars in Oslo to hear the story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi.  He spent fifteen years at Guantanamo Bay without any due process or charges, and suffered gruesome torture as uncovered both in his book “The Guantanamo Diaries” and the film “The Mauritanian”.   Mohamedou is one of the several thousands of people who have been unlawfully and undeservingly detained in prison without access to justice.  That is why Karen Tse and the work of International Bridges to Justice (IBJ) is so important. International Bridges to Justice is dedicated to ensure basic legal rights of ordinary citizens throughout the world.   Read more about the event and our pledge to IBJ here: https://lnkd.in/ew5_sxTN   #LeadershipNavigation #Justice #NGO #LegalRights #DueProcess

Establishing a Cooperative Society in Papua New Guinea Ever wanted to team up with your community to tackle a challenge? Back in July 2020, I had the chance to help set up a cooperative society in Papua New Guinea. Now, I had no prior experience, but guess what? It turned out to be a rewarding journey, and I learned a lot about the process along the way. Here's the lowdown for anyone interested: Getting Started: Team Up! You'll need at least seven people, all 18 or older, who are ready to roll up their sleeves. Foundational Meeting: This is where the magic happens! Get everyone together to brainstorm: A catchy name for your cooperative. The problem you're solving: What challenge does your community face? Your game plan: What kind of business will the cooperative run? Who's in? Decide who can join the cooperative. Pick your leaders: Elect a board and officers to guide the way. Set the rules: Create clear guidelines for smooth operation. Making it Official: > Get the paperwork: Head to the Office of the Registrar of Cooperatives or your Provincial Commerce Division to grab an application form. > Fill 'er up: Complete the form and gather any necessary documents. > Registration time! Submit your application with a K25 registration fee. My Key Takeaways: > Doing some research on the Co-operative Societies Unit (Papua New Guinea Co-operative Societies Unit) was a lifesaver! > Getting everyone on board from the start is key. That foundational meeting builds a strong foundation (pun intended!). Having clear rules keeps things running smoothly. Stay tuned! In my next post, I'll be diving deeper into the story of the Tubusereia-Boubou Producers Cooperative Society Ltd and all the amazing things they've accomplished. In the words of the former Governor of Central Province, Robert Agarobe, "Slowly but surely!" #cooperatives #communitydevelopment #communityempowerment #PapuaNewGuinea To get more information about cooperative societies and how to set them up, visit the Department of Commerce and Industry website: https://bit.ly/3UwjajG

In late 2023, New South Wales marked a significant milestone by becoming the last state in Australia to legalize Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD). In stark contrast, Indonesia grapples with challenges surrounding the legalisation of VAD, even within the framework of its forthcoming Criminal Code set to take effect in 2026. In response to this disparity, I have authored a comprehensive paper titled "Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) in Indonesia : Can It Follow Australia's Footsteps?." This scholarly work seeks to shed light on the potential for Indonesia to adopt a progressive stance akin to Australia's recent legalisation of VAD. The comparative analysis is particularly centered around the implications for human rights as delineated in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). I am honored to announce that this paper will be presented at the esteemed 15th Asian Conference on the Social Sciences (ACSS2024) in Tokyo, Japan, scheduled from May 23-27, 2024. Anticipating engaging discussions with fellow academics and experts, I look forward to exploring the intricate intersections of human rights considerations, and legal frameworks within the context of VAD. #VoluntaryAssistedDying #IndonesiaLegalReform #HumanRights #ACSS2024 #IAFOR https://acss.iafor.org/

BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS WORKSHOP Today we (Children and Young People Living for Peace aka CYPLP, Kaduna) organized a one day self funded workshop on business and Human Rights. The aim was to educate and advance United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. How can local corporate organization do businesses locally and respect human rights? How can we localize United Nations Guiding Principles from just being a document into a living and practicable realities? What are immerse benefits to companies and organizations to prevent, protect and remedy violations. Companies resident in Kaduna were our participants. And it was revealing and interesting as we colloboratively found path ways. Participants requested that this should be an event on quarterly basis to help up to speed. National Human Rights Commission Nigeria, Public Complaint Commission were there and presented their take. Amazing questions were asked and answers gotten going forward. It was astonishing that private sector are willing to partner with Civil Society Organizations to giving back to their communities but do not know how to go about it in line with SDG17. We break barriers as always and will be working forward with them to frame corporate social responsibility that addresses our local problems using local resources. That's the way to go sustainably. #humanright #CYPLP #UNGP #SDGs #OGP #UnitedNigeria #lnternationalHumanRightsCommission #lHRC #NationalHumanRightsCommission #NHRC #UnitedNationsHumanRights #UnitedNationsHumanRightsCouncil #unitednationsorganization.

GPF Brazil participated today at the online call Co-facilitator of the preparatory process of the Summit of the Future, to be held in 2024 at the General Assembly of the UN in New York, in September. Out of the follow-up comment, GPF appreciates the clarification by Stefano Gennarini, on the fact that in the preparatory documents, there are no references to family support, development, and the importance of the family for the realization of a stable future. Question: Is the UN anti-family? #SummitOfTheFuture #GPFBrazil #UNPreparations #FamilySupport #FuturePlanning #UNGeneralAssembly #FamilyImportance #StabilityAndDevelopment #UNQuestion #FamilyAdvocacy
