Fake orphanage chief arrested for selling HIV-infected child

PUNE: Yerawada police have arrested chairman of Gurukul Godavari Balak Ashram on charges of selling an HIV-infected child for Rs 1 lakh. The child had died some months after the illegal adoption.

 

The Ashram’s chairman, has been identified as Mathew Rayappa Yanmal, 39, a resident of J J Chambers in Yerawada. He has been remanded to police custody till June 4. 

 

Anita Arun Yadav, a resident of Goregaon in Mumbai, had lodged a complaint with the police in this connection. Yanmal had allegedly sold a child to Yadav for Rs 1 lakh without seeking the court permission for the adoption process. He is also accused of hiding the fact that the child was infected with HIV. Yadav filed the complaint a few months after the death of the child.
