The chief and the caretaker of a private orphanage in Orissas Sundergarh district were arrested Monday for torturing children at the shelter, police said.

Global Village president Amiyabala Sethi and caretaker Runi Sethi, both women, were arrested from Biramitrapur town, about 550 km from Bhubaneswar, the local police station chief R.C.Singh told IANS.

Some members of local Child Welfare Committee (CWC) had rescued about 45 children, aged between two to 12, from the orphanage last week after complaints that they were living in unhealthy conditions and were physically and mentally tortured. Some of the boys and girls had injury marks on their bodies allegedly caused by regular beating.

Singh said police started investigation after a complaint was filed by the CWC members. The arrests were made after prima facie evidence was found against the two, he said.
