Mangalore: German Citizen's Relentless Quest for Mother Yet to be Fulfilled

Mangalore, Apr 13: Chaya (32) alias Maria Chaya Schupp has been visiting the city often since 2004, in search of her mother. She comes every time with the renewed zeal to find her, in the expectation that her quest for her mother would be fulfilled, but has been returning home disappointed.

The relentless efforts of Chaya, who lives with her foster mother, Ingrid Schupp, at Frankfurt, Germany, began with initial visits starting 2004 during which, Ingrid had accompanied her. Chaya was adopted from the home for the destitutes at Ullal, which in the past, also functioned as adoption centre.

Chaya has also approached help from courts in finding her real mother. The present visit was the fourth since 2004, but this time too she had to return empty-handed to Mumbai on Thursday April 12.

Chaya vaguely recollects moving around Mangalore city with her mother when she was five or six years old. She says she used to converse in Kannada, and also travelled by train when young. Chaya says she does not possess any authentic record of her birth date, although one of the records mentions the same as March 24, 1976. She mentions there was a small external growth in her head when she was a year-old, and that the same had been surgically removed.

She feels she was given away because of utter poverty. She was adopted by Wolfgang Schupp and Ingrid Schupp in 1981, although this couple already had three children, because of their earnestness to do social service. She got higher education at Germany. Ingrid got separated from her husband even before her first visit to India with Chaya to search for Chaya’s natural mother.

Chaya says the centre which had given her on adoption in 1981, does not have any records about her. She has visited various sections, departments, and organizations, with the hope that she will find clinching information somewhere. But, all these efforts have so far gone down the drain.

At present, Chaya is pursuing her PhD on the subject of sex workers in Mumbai. She says she is determined to carry forward her efforts to find out the whereabouts of her mother and meet her at least once, as she is emotionally bonded with this cause, with the hope that success will be hers at last.

Maria Chaya Schupp, I am sorry to hear that even after visiting India 4 times since 2004 you have not been able to locate or find your beloved mother so far. Just pray to our Almighty God and he will solve your problem. At the same time I feel your adoption was not done in legal way as when someone is adopted they give all the documents of both parties for records. Since you do not have any records it is difficult for the administration to follow up your case. I only hope you will find your mother on day and with this media publication the facts will come out.

If she knows the year of adoption from her present mother, without any records the employees of the centre of that time may be able to give some clue about her mother as she looks quite attractive in the photo and the staff may be able to recollect some past memory since same type children are not found at one time. Best of luck in your venture Chaya.

You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back,

or you can open your eyes and see all she has left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,

or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,

or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her only that she is gone,

or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back.

or you can do what she wants:

Assuring you of our prayers

Dear Maria Chaya,if you were taken out of India in 1981 and you were about 6 years old at that time your age should be 35 years and not 32 as mentioned above.

Secondly, you were taken out of country through a Airport(may be Bombay)by scrutinizing the adoption documents. Mrs.Ingrid should have the documents.

I have adopted a child from this institute and all the documents were there from start to end. If this institute does not have any record of you,Maria, then there is something fishy. Money must have played with corruption, thus bypassed the right process.

Another clue to look for is that who was the head of that Institute during the 1980-1981. If it is the institute run by Sisters, then who was the mother Superior then.

When I adopted the child ,went through Lawyer and Judge plus adoption agency. I think some links are missing. May be she was sold through corruption. Hope she will find her Mom with god's blessings. For money anything is possible

What was your name while residing at Ullal institute.

Dear Maria Chaya: If you are reading this, I would advise you to forget about your search because it is like looking for a needle in a haystack in India. Concentrate all your love and attention on the mother that raised you. She is your real mother. I know you want to see your biological mother and I feel sorry for this this lady because she may have had to give you away due to circumstances but you will only end up being unhappy and frustrated and waste good time which should be spent with your Mamma Ingrid.

Humans are born with this inherent bondage. While I wish you a good luck with your mission, I am afraid that you may receive replies from fake mothers.

Knowing that you have a good education, and a rich country of abode and a honest heart, people may simply exploit you and you may have to be careful.

There are all traits of people in the world Here in India - the poverty to rich ratio makes it little pathetic.

All the best to you

Dear Chaya Maria, you must thank GOD for getting a loving mother by name Ingrid. Human relations is weakening everywhere but its more in India. there is no value for female foetus , will be killed in the uterus itself. thousands of cases recording daily.Relation between father and child or mother and child also remain as how it was before.

We happend to see lot of new born babies thrown in the garbage or floating in the gutters. This is the fact.

Seeing the biological mother is your dream but just think abt the incident. your own mother didnt wanted you to be with her for any reasons. Why do you want her ? See your mother in Ingrid and give all your affections to her.

That was GODS wish otherwise you would not have reached Germany.

Still wishing you goodluck for your mission

Stories repeated... The rich western eyes saw our poor kids and took to their side... This is one such case of a loop hole in our system of record which happens IN INDIA and ONLY IN INDIA.

Hope this be the last story of this type and a shame to my mother land with all rich resources and plenty of space. I pray for no such stories arise in future.... Govt should make an Inside and Abroad survey to no such cases to repeat in future.
