The EU’s Council of Ministers is advertising in this newspaper for applications for the post of director-general for justice and home affairs in the Council secretariat. A vacancy will be created by the retirement of Rafael Fernández-Pita, who turns 65 on 19 March. The former Spanish diplomat has been director-general for justice and home affairs since September 2012 and was acting director-general for a year before that and deputy director-general in 2007-11.

His replacement comes at a moment of some importance in the field of justice and home affairs – with counter-terrorism, home security and combating radicalisation of acute importance in the wake of the recent deaths in France and Belgium. The replacement will come fairly soon after similar upheaval in the European Commission. Françoise Le Bail, who was director-general for justice, freedom and security, retired at the end of September. A permanent replacement has yet to be appointed and Paraskevi Michou, who was director of civil justice, is acting director-general. The director-general for home affairs is Mathias Ruete, who was formerly director-general for transport, but was switched across to fill a vacancy created by the departure of Stefano Manservisi. That was in May.

Once Fernández-Pita has departed, none of the three directors-general will have been in post longer than a year.
