MUMBAI: Two babies of Bal Anand Orphanage in Ghatla, Chembur, have
died of acute gastroenteritis and dehydration and four others are
undergoing treatment in hospital.
On December 25, six children staying in the privately-run orphanage
complained of dehydration and were rushed to nearby hospitals. The next
day, five-month-old Khushi died. Ten-month-old Jaydeep passed away on
December 27.
“We received six children suffering from acute gastroenteritis with
dehydration. Of them, one baby passed away shortly after being brought
to the hospital and another child was transferred to another hospital. The
other babies are doing well and will be discharged soon,” said Dr Roy
Patankar, director, Zen Hospital.
Govandi police have registered a case of accidental death and are awaiting the post-mortem report.
About 45 children up to 18 years of age stay in the orphanage. Madhavi Mhatre, the director, said Baby Khushi was on milk and
baby food and Jaydeep and other babies were given khichdi cooked inside the orphanage. “Many other children ate the same
khichdi. When they felt sick, they were immediately taken to the hospital but unfortunately the two babies passed away,” said
Mhatre. She said of the four others admitted, two were in ICU but have now been shifted to the general ward and are under

observation.
“On December 25, six children were admitted after a complaint of dehydration. Two died and four others are undergoing
treatment at hospitals. Three are admitted in Zen hospital, Chembur, and one is at Kohinoor hospital, Kurla. All the children are
below one year of age. At present, no FIR has been registered and the matter is under investigation,” said Govandi police
senior inspector Shashikant Mane.
The police said the post-mortem was conducted at JJ hospital on December 28 and the provisional cause of death of Khushi is
given as “opinion reserved pending histo-pathological examination” and that of Jaydeep is “evidence of consolidation of lungs
with pleural effusion”. “In both the cases, tissues have been preserved for histo-pathological examination.
The private orphanage was started in 1984 and runs on donation. “Both the babies that died were abandoned by unwed
mothers. They would have been given up for adoption,” said Mhatre.
