Ahmedabad: Nanny tries to sell baby for adoption, arrested

6 August 2021

AHMEDABAD: Had they been even 24 hours late in finding out that their

nanny was a fraud, a family from Chandkheda would have lost their infant

to an interstate child trafficking ring. The nursemaid they had employed

this May had plotted to kidnap and sell the 11-month-old baby girl to a

couple in Pune.

However, the Pune couple, sensing something fishy, contacted the police

and helped nab the woman who was readying to abduct the child leaving

for Pune on Thursday.

The accused, who goes by the name Bindu Sharma, had been employed

by Ranjit Barva (name changed to protect identity of the minor girl), owner

of an IT company who hails from Assam and lives in a rented house in

Chandkheda.

“Since he and his wife were working, they decided to get someone full-time to look after the baby. They searched online and

came across a home services agency in Airoli, Navi Mumbai, which gave them the reference of Bindu, a resident of Jalpaiguri. The Barvas employed her and she began working for them in May,” said police Everything was smooth sailing till Ranjit got a call from West Bengal on Tuesday, informing him that his nursemaid was plotting

to kidnap his 11-month-old child. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Jalpaiguri) Samir Paul also sent him a photograph of Bindu

with his daughter.

Couple had even made a transaction

Barva confronted Bindu and asked her why she had been circulating his child’s photograph without their consent. When she

failed to give a suitable reply, he called Chandkheda police who were aware of the incident. West Bengal Police had informed

them about the incident, too.

Deputy commissioner of police (Zone II) Vijay Patel said, “We arrested Bindu on Wednesday evening. We think her husband is

involved too. So, we got her to talk to him and call him to Ahmedabad. We will arrest him once he arrives here.” Patel said,

“Bindu was in touch with Prashant Kamble from Pune who is involved in human trafficking. He helped Bindu forge adoption

papers identifying her as the birth mother and finding a Bengali couple in Pune who were keen on adopting a baby. Bindu

approached the couple and told them she was forced to give up the baby for adoption as she could no longer take care of the

child due to poverty.

“The couple bought her story, initiated paperwork and even made a financial transaction to adopt the baby. However, they

grew suspicious when Bindu could not give the baby’s birth date or other details that a mother would know. Based on the

documents she had submitted, they called the police in West Bengal. The cops investigated the matter, found the racket and

called Chandkheda police as well as the Barvas.”

The DCP added, “After Bindu was arrested, we found details of two train tickets – one from Ahmedabad to Pune, and the other

for her husband Amit and two daughters travelling from Jalpaiguri to Pune. It is clear that the couple planned to move away

from Jalpaiguri after selling the infant in Pune.”
