Madoff Mess Means Business for Pawnshops and Lazard

Bernand L. Madoff’s giant Ponzi scheme has created legions of losers across the world. These include huge European banks, charitable organizations, Eliot Spitzer’s family and many, many others.

But a few people seem be getting a boost from the debacle. One of these may be Levi Touger, who runs a scruffy pawnshop in Royal Palm Beach, Fla.

Mr. Touger tells The Associated Press that he’s seen an uptick in well-heeled customers since the Madoff scandal broke. Mr. Madoff, pictured above, was a big wheel in Palm Beach society, and many of its wealthy (or perhaps formerly wealthy) residents are facing serious reversals of fortune.

Lazard's de Combret, Partner in Paris, Leaves Firm, People Say

Lazard's de Combret, Partner in Paris, Leaves Firm, People Say

Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Lazard Ltd.'s Francois de Combret, a partner in Paris, is leaving the investment bank after 23 years advising on takeovers, people familiar with the situation said.

De Combret, 64, helped arrange last year's $5.7 billion purchase by Sagem SA, France's second-biggest maker of military electronics, of engine-maker Snecma SA. He's also a director of companies including carmaker Renault SA. De Combret and Lazard spokesman Richard Creswell declined to comment.

He's departing as Lazard's mergers ranking in France slipped to 17th, its worst in at least a decade, after a feud between Chief Executive Officer Bruce Wasserstein and former Chairman Michel David-Weill over the firm's initial public offering. Gerardo Braggiotti, a deputy chairman in charge of business outside of France and Britain, left in July after Wasserstein, 57, named Paris partner Georges Ralli to run the region with Jeffrey Rosen and William Rucker.

``When there is an IPO, there is going to be some turmoil,'' said Eileen Fahey, a credit-rating analyst at Fitch who covers U.S. investment banks, including Lazard. ``Hopefully, it slows down.''

While we wait... A subject of confusion

I have been a little confused about the way Bulgarian children are entered into the registry and think I finally understand, so I thought I would share.

However, do not write this in stone because it might change next week. Remember things are as clear as mud in the world of international adoption!!

The MOJ plans to register 4500 kids in the next 6-8 months. What this means is that these kids will be entered in the NATIONAL registry. They must remain on this registry for six months before they can be on the INTERNATIONAL registry. In my mind this means even longer waits for the many families including ours waiting for a child. It also means that there are thousands of kids in homes that are not even "adoptable". It is heartbreaking!!!

What a Weekend!

We arrived in Addis Ababa on Thursday night about 7:30, and we left for the 12-hour drive to Kamashi at 4am Friday. We stayed at the Kamashi Boys Orphanage where 150 precious young men live. On Saturday, we went to the girls' village and met their father, their grandfather, their aunt (who raised them), and their older brother and sister. We were able to go into the hut where they grew up. It was an amazing experience, and one that will be important to the girls someday. Also on Saturday we found a 10-month-old baby who was abandoned by her mother, and we brought her back to Addis Ababa on Sunday.

Since we arrived in Addis about 4:30pm, and we had to take the little abandoned baby to the transition home, we were able to go ahead and pick up our girls tonight! We have had lots of fun with them already, including bath time. They are very energetic girls who laugh until their bellies hurt. What a change from the first pictures we saw! They were very excited to see socks in their suitcase, and we had to try those on right away. It was a very big deal.

We will try to post more later and maybe some pictures if the internet cooperates, but it is dialup.
