History and foundation

The VUB emerged in 1970 when the bilingual Université libre de Bruxelles split into separate Dutch- and French-speaking institutions. This division reflected Belgium’s linguistic reforms while preserving the shared Enlightenment values of free thought and secularism. The VUB continues the legacy of academic independence established by its predecessor in 1834.

Academic structure

VUB comprises eight faculties, covering fields from engineering and sciences to law, social sciences, and medicine. It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, many with international and interdisciplinary focus. The university actively collaborates with partner institutions through networks such as the European University Alliance (EUTOPIA).
