A disproportionately large number of adopted persons, adoptive parents and distance parents rely on assistance. Voor geadopteerden (landelijk en interlandelijk), adoptieouders en afstandsouders is veel en bij wet geregeld als het gaat om het voortraject om tot een adoptie te komen. Nadat de feitelijke adoptie heeft plaatsgevonden, vervalt de ondersteuning en begeleiding echter. "Er is niéts bij wet geregeld hoe het verder gaat met de geadopteerden en hun adoptieouders als ze eenmaal zijn 'geplaatst'," verduidelijkt Anne-Marie Goossens. "Er is, kortom, géén bij wet geregelde nazorg voor geadopteerden en hun adoptieouders. De praktijk en wetenschappelijk onderzoek laten zien dat de behoefte aan gereguleerde nazorg groot is. Een disproportioneel groot aantal geadopteerden, adoptieouders en afstandsouders doet beroep op de hulpverlening. Geadopteerden hebben vier tot vijfmaal vaker dan niet geadopteerden residentiële zorg nodig."
