Sign Of Progressive Change? Girls Preferred Over Boys For Adoption In Bihar

22 July 2021

Pakhi Kumari was 2 years old and abandoned by her parents. She was raised at the Specialised Adoption Institute in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, as per The New Indian Express.

A childless couple from West Bengal, Reena and Sudipta Pal, adopted her on June 10.

Then a childless couple from USA went to Madhubani to adopt a 2-year-old abandoned girl, Kavya.

They did so in front of a magistrate.

The trend that is visible is that more girls are being preferred over boys.

This shows a sign of a change in mindset.

Progressive parents

“Counseling has also made an impact. Prospective parents are registering with choices for kids for adoption on the CERA portal and coming ahead for adopting from Bihar’s various adoption centres,” said Raj Kumar, who is the Director of Social Welfare Department.

The social welfare department's figures showed that 210 abandoned children, of which 148 were female, were adopted in 2018-19.

71 of them were adopted by Bihar couples in the country and 39 by those living overseas.

In 2019-20, 120 kids were adopted and 82 of them were female.
