Acting director of Unicef ??Belgium dismissed after accusations on Twitter

The interim director of Unicef ??Belgium, who has been in the job for only a week, was temporarily removed from office on Sunday, the organization's president, Eddy Boutmans, said in a statement.

Messages posted on Twitter brought heavy charges against the replacement, claiming he was involved - as a former treasurer of the Hacer Puente association - in a case of fraudulent adoptions in Guatemala.

"After reading some of the messages on Twitter that make heavy accusations against the acting director of Unicef ??Belgium, Bernard Sintobin, the president has asked Mr Sintobin to withdraw temporarily" for the time that clarity is made on these accusations. "The president is personally convinced that Bernard Sintobin is in good faith and is not involved in fraudulent adoptions," said Unicef ??Belgium in a statement.

An open investigation

We must remain very cautious in this matter but one thing is certain: an investigation is open to the Federal Prosecutor's Office for the association Hacer Puente. At the end of the 1980s, she organized less than 100 adoptions of Guatemalan children. But for two of these adopted children, two women say they were ripped from their parents.

Bernard Sintobin retorts that he is straight in his boots, that he acted by idealism and that he only served as an intermediary.

The person who received the money in Guatemala was the sister-in-law of the dictator of the time. For Bernard Sintobin, questioned by the Morgen, if she deceived the parents, she also deceived the association.

For its part, Unicef ??Belgium claims that the president of the association is personally convinced that Bernard Sintobin is in good faith.

Des messages postés sur Twitter ont porté de lourdes accusations à l'encontre du remplaçant, affirmant qu'il était impliqué - en tant qu'ancien trésorier de l'association Hacer Puente - dans un dossier d'adoptions frauduleuses au Guatemala.

"Après avoir lu certains messages sur Twitter qui portent de lourdes accusations à l'encontre du directeur ad interim d'Unicef Belgique, Bernard Sintobin, le président a demandé à M. Sintobin de se retirer temporairement" le temps que la clarté soit faite sur ces accusations. "Le président est personnellement convaincu que Bernard Sintobin est de bonne foi et n'est pas impliqué dans les adoptions frauduleuses", indique Unicef Belgique dans un communiqué.

Une enquête ouverte

Il faut demeurer très prudents dans cette affaire mais une chose est certaine : une enquête est ouverte au Parquet fédéral visant l'association Hacer Puente. A la fin des années 80, elle a organisé moins d'une centaine d'adoptions d'enfants guatémaltèques. Or pour deux de ces enfants adoptés, deux femmes expliquent avoir été arrachées à leurs parents.

Bernard Sintobin rétorque qu'il est droit dans ses bottes, qu'il a agi par idéalisme et qu'il a uniquement servi d'intermédiaire.

La personne qui recevait l'argent au Guatemala était la belle soeur du dictateur de l'époque. Pour Bernard Sintobin, interrogé par le Morgen, si elle a trompé les parents, elle a aussi trompé l'association.

De son côté, Unicef Belgique affirme que le président de l’association est personnellement convaincu que Bernard Sintobin est de bonne foi.
