Hungary is final!

27 June 2010

Hello Everyone,

So last Friday we decided and made the final choice to choose Hungary as the country of adoption.

This means that we indicated during the intake interview that we would go for Hungary. Our documents are now being translated into Hungarian and then sent to Budapest. (capital Hungary)

This is an important choice within the adoption process, because you can only go for 1 country (at a time). If your entire file has been sent to the chosen country, it is very complicated to switch to another country due to all kinds of issues (bureaucracy and costs).

Our choice for Hungary has partly come about because we prefer to adopt 3 or 4 children at the same time and this is a (slightly) more complicated process (in the Netherlands) than adopting 1 child. If you want to adopt more than 1 child, the number of countries you can choose from becomes more limited. In addition, you must complete a separate procedure with the Child Protection Board. So we did this.

Examples of countries where more than 1 child can come from at the same time are

Hungary, Bulgaria, Congo, Bolivia, Poland, Colombia and Haiti.

Our first choices were Haiti, Bolivia or Colombia. However, the three countries mentioned are currently not open for Dutch adoption due to their own problems. At that time we did not yet know that Hungary and Bulgaria were possible. Poland also played through our minds for a while. However, Poland has dropped out. This is partly due to the fact that many FAS children come from Poland and that 85% of those children cannot live independently at a later age. Knowing the numbers, this is not an option for us.

We had not thought of Hungary ourselves before. Purely because we didn't know that triblings (3 or more children) came from there.

After hearing this, we started to learn more about the country and their adoption process. I must say Hungary's approach to adoption is, in my opinion, great. They, of course, put the best interests of the child first, but the future adoptive parents are also well involved in the process. We had never encountered this before in any other country. Although we found that Poland also has a good adoption process.

The NAS also thought that the choice for Hungary was a good choice in our situation.

In short, Hungary is our choice and we go all the way!

Regards,

Martin

Nice that you also chose Hungary. And we can now say that beautiful fantastic children come from it. Who deserve to grow up in a loving family. Good luck with collecting all the documents. And I would probably start with the rooms, because it could go very quickly, my feeling says. We are really counting down........ just a little while and then a family of five.

Adopting three children at once... You don't know what you're getting yourself into. You may never know. But taking a risk like this... I wonder if it's in the best interest of those kids. What nobody wants: failed adoptions and children who then have to be placed out of the home.
