'Baby racket at least 3 decades old'

'Baby racket at least 3 decades old'

Priyanka Dasgupta | TNN | Dec 11, 2016, 08.02 AM IST

KOLKATA: Arun Swanand Dohle was adopted as a month-old baby from Kusumbai Motichand Mahila Seva Gram (KMMSG) in Pune by Belgium-based Michael and Gertrud Dohle.Twenty years later, in 1993, Germany-based Dohle came to Pune to trace his roots. It was in 2010 that he reunited with his biological parents. Having worked extensively on child trafficking and adoption issues, Dohle insists that the Kolkata child-trafficking scandal is at least three decades old and was covered extensively by the international media.

Browsing through old records ahead of a BBC feature on the child trafficking racket in Kolkata, Dohle spoke about international media reports that date back to August 22, 1982."Having worked in this sphere for years, I know that adoption from Kolkata was under the scanner of the international media as early as 1982. The international media had reported on the dubious system of `babies for sale' that was allegedly conducted by International Mission of Hope (IMH) in Kolkata. Incidentally, Sree Krishna Nursing Home, which has been involved in the current scandal, used to be one of the suppliers of babies to IMH," he said.

In an article titled "The short tragic life of Nathan, the baby who was bought for £ 2000", The Mail had reported that Nathan was adopted by an American couple, Ron and Robbie Flanders from the small town of Oakfield, New York. They had paid £2000 to an American adoption agency. Nathan had fallen ill within a few days of arrival to America after a long journey. Controversy had erupted over whether Nathan would have died anyway or already underweight and sick, he was `killed' by being forced to undergo such a long and exhausting jour ney in the unnatural environment of a jet aircraft.Fingers were also pointed at an international airlines for shipping "unwanted Indian children 9,000 miles to America".

Rebesani left Save the Children Italy job

Rebesani, whom Mogherini met at a European congress in Strasbourg, left his job in Rome with Save the Children Italy because he believed it posed a conflict of interest. “He’s a very present father,” she says, and they share the parenting as equally as possible. “There have been times when he was working twelve hours a day, and I was working less; times when I am working twelve hours a day, and him less.” I suggest that Italian men are not known for such egalitarianism. “Not at all,” Mogherini says with a laugh. “People tell me I’m lucky, but you choose the people you’re with. Building a relationship based on equal responsibility—it’s also up to the woman.”

CONGO, THE 31 ADOPTED CHILDREN ARRIVING IN ITALY. MOGHERINI: "HAPPY CONCLUSION OF THE CASE"

"The case seems to have come to a successful conclusion thanks to all the people who have worked with tireless dedication." The Minister of Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini comments on the last developments in the case of 31 children adopted in Democratic Republic of Congo, But now Italian citizens stranded in Kinshasafor bureaucratic reasons. Already on Monday, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi announced on Twitter to have "just given the green light: a plane part of the Italian Republic for Congo to return adopted children stuck for months# Acasa". On arrival times at the moment there is still no certainty. "When will I know," said Mogherini.

An agreement between the prime minister Matteo Renzi and the Congolese president Joseph Kabilahas helped to unlock a situation that holds the rope for many months 24 families, And within the children can be reunited with their adoptive parents. According to the president of the Commission for International Adoptions (Cai) Silvia Della Monica, The expected arrival Italy of 31 children is a matter of a few days: "We will do as quickly as possible," he assured. Della Monica - magistrate only two months at the head of Cai - Sent a letter to the families and agencies involved, recommending "to act with prudence and discretion, not to take individual initiatives" to link up with the same Cai and follow the instructions of the latter. In particular, believes "most necessary to reiterate how inappropriate and risky at this sensitive time, the departure of adoptive families for the Congo."

If anything, therefore, waiting for the story ends. A story that goes on for months, with 24 couples who despite having completed the adoption process have not yet been able to bring home their children due to the lack of clearance by the Congolese authorities. Last September Kinshasa had decided to suspend for one year the authorization for the release of all international adoptions, on suspicion of irregular procedures that, however, as they had at the time reported the same Congolese authorities did not concern Italy. In early November, the then Minister Kyenge Cécile, who had held the mandate for international adoptions, had carried out a mission in Democratic Republic of Congo getting insurance on a successful conclusion of the adoption by the Italian couples. Some families had left for the CongoBut were stuck in Country African without being able to bring home their children.

Congo clears the way for 72 adoptions after 2-year wait

Congo clears the way for 72 adoptions after 2-year wait

By the Associated Press | November 2, 2015 | 10:35 AM EST

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Congo's government cleared the way Monday for dozens of children to join their adoptive families abroad after more than two years of waiting, though a further 1,000 others will have to remain in orphanages for now.

Fourteen of the children are now headed to the United States, while other boys and girls are going to start new lives in Italy, Belgium, Canada, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Authorities in Congo put a halt to international adoptions in 2013, saying their adoption system was beset by corruption and falsified documents. The children's adoptions had been legally approved by the Congolese courts before the government suspended the issuing of exit permits, causing heartache and frustration for families around the world.
