The number of applications for the adoption of Sri Lankan children has increased in recent times, Probation and Childcare Department (PCD) Commissioner said yesterday.

“Each year we receive more than 5,000 applications for adoption but these keep increasing,” PCD Commissioner D.M.S. Abeyagunawardene said and added that the availability of children suitable for adoption was much fewer than the demand. The Adoption of Children Ordinance states it is compulsory to obtain the consent of the child’s biological parents for an adoption to be valid.

ETHIOPIA ADOPTION PROGRAM UPDATE – FEBRUARY, 2009

ETHIOPIA ADOPTION PROGRAM UPDATE – FEBRUARY, 2009

Lynn and I just returned home from spending eight wonderful days with our staff in Ethiopia. We met with government officials, orphanage staff, foster home staff, and U.S. Embassy officials. We also met with officials from Ethiopian Airlines and three major hotels in Addis. In addition, we escorted two beautiful children from their foster homes to their adoptive family in Dallas, Texas.

We currently have 27 adoptions in progress in Ethiopia. Twelve will be finalized with the next two months. Our Ethiopian staff set a goal of assisting a minimum of 70 orphaned children to be placed with wonderful families in the United States through West Sands Adoptions in 2009! Our goal is to more than double that number in 2010. We are all committed to accomplishing this goal. In addition, WSA is in the process of establishing a Free Medical Clinic in Ethiopia.

We have worked hard to streamline the adoption process and keep the cost of adopting as low as possible. Please contact us at asacredmission@gmail.com, 435-313-6323 or toll-free at 866-677-3077 for: 1) A list of the step by step procedures in adopting from Ethiopia, and 2) Our current fee schedule. We will be more than happy to personally answer any questions you may have.

*Government policy (MOWA) allows single women to adopt from Ethiopia. Please note that the difference between the age of the adoptive mother and adoptive children should not exceed 40 years. For example, if an adoptive mother is age 55, she can adopt children 15 years of age or older.

The recent spate of media attention focusing on a foreign inter-country adoption program involving Ethiopia children has led to speculation about the Ethiopian-Australian program. (AFP: Roberto Schmidt, file photo)

We're at the checkout at our local IGA, working fast because the kids have spotted the chocolates placed strategically at kid-friendly height. The woman next in line asks pleasantly, and within ear-shot of one and all, whether their 'real' parents are dead. I smile and say politely 'yes'.

Blog: Please Pray

Please Pray

For those of you that aren't involved in the Ethiopian adoption community, or don't know already, many families are in crisis right now because of the suspension of adoptions by MOWA (the Ministry for Women's Affairs) for children coming out of Enat Alem orphanage. Rumors about the why's and wherefore's and how long it may take to get sorted out are all over the map. Basically, no one knows all the details, and we may never know the whole story.

I'd like to ask you to pray for the families waiting for their sons and daughters whose adoptions are stalled (including our dear friends the Yateses waiting for baby D). My heart, and I know many of yours are too, is aching for the babies and children stuck in Ethiopia under a pile of red tape and for their Forever Families who've been on a journey to them for months and years now wondering how much longer the wait will be.

Ethiopia revokes licences of nine charitable organizations

APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)

Ethiopia revoked the license of nine orphanages (charity organizations) who they claim to be involved in ‘illegal’ activities of child rights abuse, APA learns here on Wednesday.

The nine charity organizations have been working to adopt children for the past few years to Europe and America.

However, the office, which is in charge of registering charity organizations at the Ethiopian Ministry of Justice refused to give details as to what kind of illegal activities the organizations were involved with regards to child rights abuse.
